She's going to need a fork...

As a lot of you know, our first born tax deduction will be leaving the nest this week and going to college in another state. Which state you might ask? Well, I’ll tell you. I think she’s going to be in the state of Confusion, which is not to be confused with the state of Yes-I’m-Blond-Why-Do-You-Ask?.

Case in point. My little fledgling will be living in a dorm with four other girls. There will be a kitchen there. For cooking. Meals. Do you see where I’m going with this? If she wants to eat food she will need to make it herself. This will require some work on her part other than walking into the kitchen, saying ‘ooh that smells good when is dinner?’.

A few months ago she made a frozen pizza and nearly had a meltdown. This is a girl who aced her SAT, who was in the Gifted Programs through school and who reads the classics for relaxation. This is not a dumb girl, but she could not figure out how to bake the pizza and asked me to bake it for her. I declined, informing her that she would soon be cooking for herself and learning to make a frozen pizza on her own might be a good first step in the right direction.
She was not pleased, but did manage to bake the pizza without burning down the house or injuring herself. I counted this a success, albeit a small one.

My daughter will be flying to her new school with lots of luggage and we had the following conversation the other day:
Tax Deduction: “I’m going to have a microwave there, right?”
Me: “Yes, you’ll have a microwave and an oven”
Tax Deduction: “When are we going to buy groceries?”
Me: “For who?”
Tax Deduction: (expressive eyeroll) “ME, mom. I’m going to need to take groceries with me”

At this point I’m staring at her open-mouthed with one of those looks on my face. The one that clearly says ‘you can’t be serious here’. She ignores my look, as usual, and goes on to list the canned goods she’ll be requiring. Canned goods. To take on the plane in her luggage. I snap my mouth shut and ask her if she thinks they don’t have groceries stores where she’s going.

There’s a long pause as she thinks about this question. I can almost see the little hamster on the wheel in her head going around and around and not getting anywhere, so I try again. I am gentle with her, as scaring her is not my intention.

Me: “Um hija? How about we go grocery shopping when we get there?”
Tax Deduction: “But they won’t have the same kind of food that I like there!.”
Me: “Hija, this is not Mars you’re going to. There are stores there. They stock food. In fact the very same food that you find in the stores here, you’ll find there. I promise.”
Tax Deduction: “Are you sure? How do you know?”
Me: “I’ve actually been where you’re going and the only time I had to shoot a deer for meat was that one brutally cold
winter when there was nothing left in the barn and we were starving, so I got out my trusty gun and followed some
tracks in the snow. Well about that time…”
Tax Deduction: “Mooooooooom!! That’s not funny!”
Me: “I didn’t think so either. Have you ever had to gut a deer with only a dinner fork? I tell you what, it’s not…..”
Tax Deduction: “Mom, stop it!”
Me: “Fine, ok. But I’m almost certain you won’t have to kill your food there and there are stores stocked with everything
you’ll need, so we’ll wait to shop till we get there, ok?”

So now my beautiful blond tax deduction will soon be leaving the nest. I better make sure I pack her a fork.

Bahahahahaahahaha!!! Too funny! You'd think she was indeed going to Mars, or at least another country if she didn't realize other states have grocery stores with the same stuff that we have! LOL! Great one, Pam! :o)

Wheeeeeeee!

Today I was awakened to the not-so-delightful sounds of enormous dump trucks, (you know the ones that are a dump truck and they haul a trailer behind?) dumping truck load after truck load of dirt behind my house. Then the most incredibly noisey and squeaky (do they not grease the tracks on those things??) grader began shoving the dirt and rocks around. I had to fight the urge to throw a can of WD40 over the fence to the driver. It wasn't even eight in the morning. It wasn't even 7:30 yet. So I reluctantly arose from my bed and cleaned up the kitchen. After it was spotless, I went back upstairs to my freeze-zone (the only room in the house with AC) to do some online banking and make calls to check on medical bills, etc. As I was finishing up, in walks my husband! At first I had a moment of Oh-no-he's-lost-his-job terror. Then it passed after he smiled. Seems they ran out of work for the day. Odd, but then that's Boeing. So hubby was roped into going school cloth

Peace Begins with You

In my readings this week, I came across a video of Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin. He gave a talk entitled, "Peace Within." Who doesn't want peace? Who doesn't crave peace within their soul? In their lives? In their hearts and in their homes? How often do we have complete peace? I'd say my answer would have to be that there isn't enough peace in my life, heart or home. It's not like I live in a warzone--I do not. I'm blessed to live in a nation where I have freedoms granted to me by the founding fathers and I do not risk being struck down by bombs or shot by snipers when I venture forth from my home. My neighborhood is relatively safe, so much so that I take solo walks. The peace I speak of is something different. It's the peace that can be with me no matter my circumstances. I crave that peace. Elder Wirthlin says that peace begins in the hearts of righteous individuals. How does it begin? With a relationship with our creator. In ferven

She's Something...

Most of you know that I've got four children. My eldest is seventeen. Oh heavens...how did that happen? Wasn't I just seventeen the other day? I'm sure I was.... Well, she's amazing. I know the majority of mothers have very high compliments to pay their children--and rightly so. However, my baby girl is astounding by anyone's standards. She is going to high school and college at the same time. In high school she's taking mostly AP (Advanced Placement) classes, which also count for college credits. She gets up at five a.m. every morning, goes to Seminary, then goes to school, she works four hours daily as an office manager at Winderemere Real Estate. She speaks Spanish, plays piano, guitar and flute. She goes to the gym daily and it shows. This was her yesterday. This is a picture I just took of her, after getting her braces put on. Now, having said that she is gifted and talented, I should ammend this post to tell you the following. She just got home
