Suicide, haircuts, and postponing decicions

The night after the big party at our house, a nearly full can of rootbeer jumped to it's death from our dresser around midnight. I heard it go and then there was the hiss of the pop escaping the can and soaking into our carpeting.

I was not pleased.

We'd gone through the house with a trash bag after the party collecting empty cans of pop, full cans of pop, half full cups of punch and numerous plates from full to empty. I thought we'd collected it all...but apparently we missed this one can.

It's suicide leap wasn't without help of course. The cats helped it along and then dropped to the floor to see what it tasted like.

Dang cats.

My son's hair is very long. We've been discussing the merits of being able to see, vs not being able to see when you're...oh, say, riding your dirtbike around hills and trees. Dirtbiking is his new passion, as you can see below. He's the one on the left. The one with too much hair in his eyes.

So he comes to us at ten the other night declaring that he wanted a haircut. Now. Right this very minute. He was ready. Let's go. C'mon.

As his parental units, we both looked at the clock, looked at each other, looked back at the clock and then stood there dumbfounded. We informed him that it was indeed a good and wise decision, however since we weren't living in Las Vegas where you can get anything you want anytime you want, his sudden urge to cut his hair would have to wait until tomorrow.

Of course when tomorrow came, the urge had passed.

  1. You should have whipped out the buzz cutters and given him a haircut!
I don't know what makes perfectly normal household items commit suicide. I've had framed pictures on walls do that.

  2. I know what you mean! So many things leap to their deaths in my home on a daily basis. Things get broken and no one here (of course) has the slightest idea on how it all happened.

    Life is a mystery.

  3. Pamela, some things can't be postponed...What a cute boy and I love that hair! If he doesn't cut it soon he will have to put it back in a pony tail!

  4. "Now. Right this very minute..."
Aren't teens fun? Why does rebellion start with the hair I wonder.

I've told my son -who wears his hair short- that "his mom loves men with short hair and no mustache, it'll just kill her if he was to do either of those things".

:) so far, he cares about me not dying

  5. I think it's the angry spirits who make things fall down. Don't you remember "Ghost?" If that's not an authority, I don't know what is.

As for the hair, I don't know why they don't have all-night haircut spots but it's probably a good thing they don't.

Healing

As I've been reading Conference Talks, I was touched by one by Elder Neil L. Anderson. He spoke of healing. Not in a physical sense, although that is also within the purview of the Lord, but about spiritual healing. When we've done something wrong, and everyone has, we should rightly feel guilt. Sometimes we feel shame. Some say that these feelings are not valid, they are bad and unproductive, and I agree in part. Those feelings are horrible, but they are not unproductive if they lead you to real repentance and a change for the better in your life. We are counseled to come unto Christ, so that He may heal us. There is no sin that cannot be forgiven. There is no wrong that cannot, in the end and with proper steps taken, that cannot be wiped clean. I'm grateful for this promise--because the world needs peace and I need mercy. (That's another quote from one of the apostles). I'm so grateful for so many things--not the least of which is the opportunity to ...

Ahhhhhh

Ally and I just got back from the gym. I went every day last week and even though it's Spring break for the kids and me this week, I promised myself I wouldn't fall off the wagon. No, not that one. I've fallen off so many times I've got callouses and other assorted damages from hitting the ground. We'll see how this works out this time. One day at a time, right? I can't do more than I can do. Whoa, how profound is that? You're right. Not very. I'm fighting a cold right now---scratchy painful throat, ears that won't unplug and a heavy feeling in my chest that I fear does not bode well for the rest of the week. Not that we're taking a vacation. We'd love to of course, but what with times the way they are and the things we need to get done here, it simply wasn't an option. So what are we doing for our spectacular spring break? I'm glad you asked. We're cleaning! Yes, you heard right. And my kids (Ok, the younger ones at an...

Wheeeeeeee!

Today I was awakened to the not-so-delightful sounds of enormous dump trucks, (you know the ones that are a dump truck and they haul a trailer behind?) dumping truck load after truck load of dirt behind my house. Then the most incredibly noisey and squeaky (do they not grease the tracks on those things??) grader began shoving the dirt and rocks around. I had to fight the urge to throw a can of WD40 over the fence to the driver. It wasn't even eight in the morning. It wasn't even 7:30 yet. So I reluctantly arose from my bed and cleaned up the kitchen. After it was spotless, I went back upstairs to my freeze-zone (the only room in the house with AC) to do some online banking and make calls to check on medical bills, etc. As I was finishing up, in walks my husband! At first I had a moment of Oh-no-he's-lost-his-job terror. Then it passed after he smiled. Seems they ran out of work for the day. Odd, but then that's Boeing. So hubby was roped into going school cloth...
